Why making products with Yiddish moves me so deeply

I have never been interested in making pretty products that sit on the sideboard. Each product I make has a story and comes from my Kishkes - gut. I love making products with Yiddish

In our family, a typical Jewish family, lots of languages flew around the kitchen table. I spoke to my mother in Hungarian to my father in Yiddish, my parents spoke German together, my mother spoke Ladino to her mother and when my parents didn't want us to understand them, my mother spoke in Serbian and was answered by my father in Polish, my brother and I spoke together -not often, but in English. This all transpired in Sydney, Australia.

Language has such deep associations for me and so many people. My father passed away when I was 16, and with him the world of everyday Yiddish, I remember so many expressions he used to say to me, Di bist a sheine meidele und a vilde chaya, you are a  Nice girl and a wild beast! - a fair description I suppose.

To me Yiddish is and its wisdom, is a world so totally encompassing and warm and rich, so essentially Jewish, it is my Father and his father and his father again. So far from shorthand digital speak, that is so flat. Yiddish is juicy and goes to the heart and soul.

And that's why I make items with Yiddish expressions. Man Plans and Gd laughs, One good friend is better than 10 relatives, Money and children make for a nice world, If you can't have what you like , then like what you have.

Some people cry and some laugh when they see these coaster or bowls or aprons, they are moved. If I am in the store I talk about my father and that makes me happy. I feel an obligation to produce the products, and hope it extends the reach even if in a very small way of this saftig - juicy language. My tribute to Yom Ha Shoah Holocaust memorial day
